Artistic Combinations | Cleveland Senior Photographer

He told me he would be wearing all black. Tremont with it's ivy covered walls didn't fit his style. Xavier, as the pictures describe, is a young man full of wonderful paradoxes. He enjoys listening to T-Pain and B.O.B, but you will probably find him reading about Roman and Greek History while he listens.

Though graffiti is the art that surrounds him in these pictures, the classical section of the art museum is one of his favorite places to hang out.

While he chose to surround himself with graffiti covered walls and the ruins of industrial Cleveland during his session, he aspires to be an architect at one of the finest universities in America. His favorite style of architecture is Colonialism.

After an afternoon of pleasant surprises, I should not have been shocked at all to see the most wonderful smile emerge from the piles of rubble.

The Cupcake Shop

I tried to persuade my husband to rent an apartment simply for the fact that it was located right next to the cutest cupcake shop. A pink cupcake shop with the most adorable table and chairs outside. I envisioned myself sitting with clients, outside the shop, discussing print orders over a cupcake. Only problem was that I would have to once again live in a cave of an apartment. No light...at all! Who creates living spaces without natural light??

God intervened. We now live only 3 block away from that same cupcake shop in a cozy little apartment filled with natural light. It was only a matter of time before I had an excuse to step foot in the shop.

This is what my sister-in-law and I purchased...

Flavors(clockwise from left to right): Peanut Butter Explosion, Salted Carmel, Lemon, and Espresso.

The streets of Kathmandu: The Temples | Traveling Photographer-Nepal

She looked at me. Her stare was gentle but confident. She watched me as I walked down the streets of Patan past the vendors. In America, she may have been scolded in fear of making me (the victim) uncomfortable, but I felt welcome as she smiled.

We followed a stone staircase up off the street to the rooftop. She ran from her post with the other children to greet us as we approached the top. Her words came flooding out of her mouth. I knew she was asking questions, but what good was an English answer that most likely didn't confront her question. I smiled instead, but all I really wanted to do was talk with her.

We could see from the rooftop the ancient temples of Nepal.

On foot, you cannot travel more than a few feet without the presence of a temple/shrine, holy water, pictures of gods & goddesses plastered on home and business fronts...every part of daily life is surrounded, encompassed by religion. Prayer is never forgotten and karma is always present.

Boys play in the holy water, while some come to drink and gather it in jars, others simply take a moment to step in and rinse the dust off their feet

We found that everywhere we would travel to in Nepal, we would be warmly welcomed. The people have a generosity and kindness that is baffling at times. I loved being amongst the Nepali people, but my heart broke for them. They are surrounded by a religion, yet they themselves rarely experience love.

He is not afraid to reach after his Dream. It all started two year ago with his first performance. As Dustin talked about the numerous plays he has been in since then, he radiated with joy. Theater has become his passion and he is running hard after it. He has learned how to be presence at the very edge of the stage as well as be the strength behind the set. He has learned how to tap dance! I have tried tap dancing...and it is no easy two step. He is driven to learn and his passion is great...with that I am excited to see the places he will go.

You would never know that this was a cold and rainy day. Gutters poured down on Dustin's head and on top of that I asked him to sit on the muddy ground and in puddles. You would never know because he just smiled the whole way through.

We found a fun coffee shop full of old record players and music. Dustin added an extra beat to the place as he busted some moves in his tap shoes.

The Luckiest

I had been wanting to watch it again for weeks! Yes, I am one of those girls that loves to watch the same chick flick over and over and over again. And this one was on my list. I don't know if it was the same Irish accents that got me in P.S. I Love You, the GORGEOUS scenary, the lack of Hollywood cheating and betrayal, or just the ridiculously cute cute storyline, but I wanted to see Leap Year again.

I had been obnoxiously bugging Matt every weekend. I practically told him the whole storyline and tried to think of reasons why he should love it too.

So when I saw it at the Library, I almost squealed with delight. I came around the corner to find him looking at propably a movie full of adventure, thrill, and suspense. I said to him, guess what?" He took one look at my face and said "You found it." I practically shoved the movie into his face. "Look!" He put his movie down and asked if I was ready to check out. "You aren't going to get anything?!"I said. No, I'm good.

I snuggled up against him on the couch. I was so excited. The first cute scene past, and then the next...and with every one I looked up at him to see if he was liking it as much as I was. I waited for him to glance at me and then nuzzled in closer. The End came and I asked right away if he liked it. He smiled, said it was good, and I nuzzled back into his arms.

Matt, thanks for loving me. I am the luckiest.

The Streets of Kathmandu: The Market | Traveling Photographer-Nepal

We crossed the street in Kathmandu to get there...it was so worth almost getting hit by a honking motor cyclist, decorated bus, and few bicycles. Luckily this time there were no goats or yaks to cross our path.

Fresh hanging bananas, peppers in baskets, spices, vegetables, exotic fruits....it was one of those heavenly sung "ahhhh" moments.

Isn't it beautiful?

I was absolutely beside myself. Matt had to save me a few times from bumping into the locals and a few motorcyclists, as I was completely enveloped in my surroundings and wanting to capture it all.

Up on top a roof overlooking the ancient temples, a man stuffed pillows.

I could have stayed for days. It was so colorful and full of life. I wanted to sit in their shops and talk, but all I knew was a simple, "Namaste( the Nepali word for hello, which means I greet the god within you)" and smile.

There are certain rare photographs that for me really capture a moment...a story that I simply cannot put into words. A story that makes me wonder, ask questions...stop.

When I find them on the back of my camera LCD screen, my heart begins to do a victory dance...you would never know it because on the surface I am speechless...and bearing only a soft smile

I long for more of those moments captured.

I was in 80 degree weather just days ago. Today I am in slippers and three layers all bundled beneath a blanket sipping steaming tea. The leaves are changing out my window and the market yesterday was flooded with apples and varieties of squash. I am trying to embrace it.

In the process of moving, months ago, I never ordered our heat to be turned on...so what do I do, I bake.

This whole wheat bread turned out to be absolutely delicious and very healthy. The perfect food for my adventurous stomach that ate who knows what over the last 2 weeks in the villages of Nepal.

I ran up the flight of stairs, barged into his bedroom, and began dragging him out of bed.

"Shower...Shave...Come on quickly!"

He looked at me lathargically, " Ummm hi?"

"Oh yeah, hi....let's go. We are losing light! " I said as I paced back in forth across his room calculating like a nutty professor.

His eyes lulled shut and he became half responsive.

Aahhhh....

My ranting and raving finally pulled him out of bed.

(A little bit of background: It was 6:00pm Drew was tired from lifeguarding all day and I had just driven from Cleveland to Holland to take my brothers senior pictures.)

With a large large pile of clothes in hand & my camera we jumped into the jeep.

"Where are we going?" he asked.

"Umm..not so sure," I said as I just began to drive...

Meet Drew my younger brother.

I know good looking right?...it runs in the family!

Girls if you are interested his number is.....

Drew knows music better than anyone I know. He is always singing...listening...playing...DJ--ing(?)

He always knows what songs are going to be radio hits months in advance.

My Family lives just moments from lake Michigan. Drew and I took a long walk out to this private beach. He loves the water. Last time we talked he was swimming every morning...oh how I miss swimming in the morning.

He thinks I am hilarious... :)

Drew always tells me he has hobbit feet. You know like Frodo... If he is right..then I have hobbit feet too.

Drew is an awesome guy to talk to. He is honest, heart felt, and genuinely cares about your life. Just don't get into a debate with him...you will lose.

Almost done, I said...do a grand finale jump! I love his smile in these!

We walked off the beach as the sun set. It was my favorite session by far...hanging out with my brother...laughing...talking...showing off our outrageous modeling skills to all of holland...mostly laughing.

We are going to Nepal!!!!

I had band aids plastered to both arms. 5 Shots and I could have gotten more!!! I thought I would need maybe two to ward of death, but 5!! My one arm began to go numb and the other increasingly sore. I for the first time felt like I was officially going to Nepal and the excitement set in...

...and I have no idea what to expect except an adventure.

I am used to trips where every moment of everyday is planned. Free time- planned. Relax on the beach the entire vacation- still planned. This trip...close to nothing is planned. Don't worry we do have lodging.

So you are probably thinking...Cassie why would you have a problem with that?
I know I know... I am horrible at organizing...I do not have a day planner- I've tried and it makes me go nuts, and the only thing I really plan for in a day is breakfast lunch and dinner. Oh and a midnight snack. I am a girl that LOVES spontaneity and surprises.

So to answer your question... I don't have a problem with it what so ever! I am so excited!!

I do know that we are flying into Kathmandu. I do know we are driving then into rural Nepal. I do know that we are visiting an orphanage and a few villages!!! and I do know that the first thing in my suitcase is my camera!

So get ready to be surprised right along with me for some amazing stories and many photos.

When are we leaving....Ahhh TWO days!!! I am just bursting with excitement!

It was the first day of school. I can remember my mom pulling out of the oven blueberry coffee cake mmmm... and setting it on the table. That wonderful smell was altered drastically when my dog Cocoa ran under the table carrying the spray of a skunk. It's a memory that makes me smile and laugh. Bluebeery coffee cake has never tasted the same. If only my mom caught on camera our crinkled up noses hiding beneath the sleeves of our shirts trying to find clean air.

This is the very reason Jessica called me. She needed memories captured... quickly. They were moving and their house just sold. The news was bitter sweet because they were leaving behind a home; their first home, where their little girl took her first steps.

My prayer is that these images and the ones to come will help make this transition a little easier.

Shaya loves to help her mommy water the flowers

This family is beautiful in so many ways. I felt honored to spend just an hour or two with them.

She loves to workout and play basketball with her daddy. Check it out...she can dunk!

We have had a wonderful few days with family and friends- went to the Brown's game, the West Side Market ( how could we not!), Cleveland Art Museum, had Pizza twice, breakfast with friends, I learned how to play Spades (card game), beach volleyball and a movie, ate way too much food and chocolate chip cookies and now....relaxation

We took adventures through the woods. Over the bridge where the Troll lived and up beyond the creek.

Have you ever heard of a whoopie? or maybe you call it a scooter pie. In any case, all you need to know is that it is chocolate cake mushed around marshmallowy goodness!

Jasmine Star, one of the best wedding photographers, once wrote on her blog, "Why am I such a chicken? I swear, I should just lay an egg to complete this metamorphosis." All I could hear in my head when I read this was BabOk baBOK. This is soooo me. I mean, I hide from pregnant women at the coffee shop... as if they know that I am a newborn photographer!! If I am walking home...I will take another route or at least make no eye contact when passing a mom pushing her toddler in a stroller. I am not kidding; it is that bad. I start breaking out into a sweat before I ask friends if I can photograph their children.

I was doing some email at a coffee shop one day when I overheard two women planning their friend's baby shower just a table away. I thought to myself, " they should gift the mom to be with a newborn session! What a great idea!" Then my palms began to sweat. It took me at least a half hour to build up the courage to offer them my card and idea! I clumsily stood up, gathered my gear and approached them. With a shaky voice I said, " Umm excuse me...."

As I left the shop, I was out of breath and beet red, probably because I had been holding my breath for the last half hour, but I felt so accomplished. I mean it's not like I was conquering world hunger, but it did feel like a big step forward

This is obviously not good for business and it needs to stop! Is it just that I am shy? Scared of their response? Afraid of being intrusive or annoying? I know it is not the fear of being intimidating. I mean with blue eyes, baby cheeks, and the face of a teen...I don't think I have a chance at being intimidating. Whatever it is that is causing it..I am waging a war to fight it.

Fun at the Carnival

Eyes lit up as the bounce house castle filled with air. The smell of cotton candy & popcorn attracted the noses of children and adults around the church neighborhood. Everyone was invited.

This little man stepped on up to be transformed into batman. I just melted when I saw those long eyelashes through my camera lens.

It was a perfect night to turn your tongue blue with a snow cone.

My Beard

I thought it was the silliest poem ever. Every time I heard it I died laughing. I loved it. I recited it in front of my fourth grade class. I had to practice over and over and over again so I could make it through without laughing...I didn't. I knew it by heart and still do. Here is how it goes...

They waited so long to meet him. Days passed the due date. It had to be soon. Friends and family glanced down at the bulging belly, " Still here?" Mommy rolled her eyes and smiled as she looked down at her belly hoping that that very day would be the day.

The day came, a little later than expected, but all was forgotten when they held their little boy in their hands.

We had bath time outside

with a little 50's vibe. This little girl is always such a joy to photograph.

Her curls too cute and I am lovin' that tongue sticking out.

All wrapped up and smiling at her mommy. As soon as she hears her mommy's voice she giggles with joy.

What did I get at the Grocery Store?

It was supposed to be an easy dinner, at least that is what the magazine said. Grilled Chicken Taco Pizza- how could it go wrong. Well...

First you need to season the chicken...no taco seasoning. Oh, well I will just make my own.

Then you need to roll out the store bought pizza dough...forgot that one on the grocery list. Oh well, I will just make my own.

Next, comes the guacamole. Great, I had all of the ingredients. I made my own.

After that salsa. After questioning the layer of mold inside the jar...I opted to yet again make my own.

Easy recipe...ha took me two hours! What didn't I make?! Well thank goodness I didn't have to cure my own cheese or raise a chicken.

And I think I made everything in bulk- what was I thinking.

Now that is A LOT of salsa!

Then I finished off the 2 hour meal by baking berry crisp.

All 7 of us college roommates met up in Ann Arbor for a girls weekend! What did we do...

...what girls do best: chatted like crazy, shopped, danced, watched girly movies, and ate ice cream and lots of chocolate.

Ha. Take a look at these old school glasses...I really should have purchased these.

Aren't they beautiful! Yes, your legs are beautiful too (who stole the camera and snapped that picture? Becka? must be it's way artsy)

Beautiful even on a Sunday morning at the diner.

There is something about this picture that I love ( Becka I think this is one of yours too). Is it the motion, a story being told, or just the memory of that ice cream melting, dripping all over me.

I wish I had more pictures, but at the end of the day sometimes I need to simply put down my camera and enjoy the moments. I couldn't have asked for a better weekend. Meet up next year!

We Moved

Happy Monday! Don't you wish you were here. I just want to jump into this picture and run into the lake. I would even take just the baby pool and umbrella. I can't say I will be one of those mom's one day that packs a baby pool in my beach bag. By the time I hear the words, " We are going to the beach," I am out the door. If only I got ready that fast all of the time.

What are we up to?... PACKING....and not for vacation.

WE ARE MOVING! Don't panic, not far. Just around the corner to Tremont! So next time you visit to order pictures or just say hi, maybe we will stop and get a cupcake at the shop around the corner from our new place and walk a block to the park!

My Dad and I were walking to the neighborhood pool when my Dad noticed these little girls across the lawn. He reached into his pockets looking for change. Empty. He said we had to go back to the house. While he grabbed some change I grabbed my camera. How cute are these two?!

My dad asked for a brownie and 2 cups of lemonade. One little girl replied, "alright, but I am not going to give you this brownie. I by accident sprayed it with perfume."

The lemonade was DELICIOUS! The brownie no idea. I looked for it and only found chocolate on my dad's face.

Coming home to Big Red (Holland, MI Family Photographer)

The sand feels so good between your toes. It is softer than any other beach I have experienced from the East to the West Coast and down to the tropical islands. It makes a funny squeak as you walk towards the water. Coming back to this beach is in a sense coming home.

It was just a minutes drive away. We all went to watch the fireworks over top of Big Red, the famous Holland lighthouse.

Camping in the Mountains (Ohio Family Photographer)

It was literally a roller coaster of mountains to get to our camp site deep in the heart of Pennsylvania. We tented at 11:00 pm and awoke just steps from a beautiful lake-front view surrounded by mountains. Did I take a pic? Whoops! We hiked through the mountains which semi-defeated us as we detoured from the trail tired and really sweaty. Pic? Nope. I know what a photographer I am.

I did catch this...Katie found a bubble wand in our Jeep!

Yup that's right we grilled pizza over a campfire! We camped at a primitive site, I mean you had to pump water out of a spicket and walk/ fall down a hill to the hole in the ground potty. When it came to food though, we ate in style. Omelets and pastries ( cinnamon rolls, blueberry muffins, strawberry bread mmmmm) for breakfast with sides of sausage and Pork Roll (never heard of it? It is the most amazing breakfast meat, but it's only made on the East Coast). Just your classic PB&J, bagels (only authentically made on East Coast) and cream cheese. Then there was dinner. We had southwestern salad, spanish rice, and BBQ chicken hot of the fire. Oh and pizza too.

Bpop was a little tired by the end of the trip.

We all were.

and then the real adventure started....the ride home.

Sick Campers

We were an hour into our drive home from a wonderful weekend of camping...and I got sick. Four times Matt swerved to the side of the road, twice I didn't make it.

It was a long five hour trip.

I lethargically rolled over this morning to my phone ringing. Matt was on his way home from work; he was sick. Another phone call...everyone was sick.

He walked in the door with these!

The Detox

We started the detox on Sunday morning, me thinking eh no big deal. Haha was I in for a surprise! I really thought it would be easy. Matt and I have gone with out food completely for even longer periods of time. No, it was not painless, but it has been done. So 5 days on fruits vegetables and some eggs, fish, and nuts should be a walk in the park, right?

I mean, Matt and I eat very healthy, anyway. We eat mostly whole grains, fish once a week, a good amount of fruits and vegetables, almost everything is fresh (meaning not a lot of cannned foods) and we rarely have dessert or junk food in the house. We probably stop at a fast food place twice a year! We still thought it was a good idea to cleanse our bodies of anything unhealthy.

So we are on day 3. Yesterday, I was begging God to make it day 5 in the blink of an eye. Mom don't worry we are okay just a little shaky and woozy. Oh, and tired. I wake up in the morning and feel like I need a nap an hour later!

However, today is getting better and I am feeling a little more positive as the day goes on.

Our meals are very pretty looking...

Fresh fruits and veggies, organic eggs...we had salmon and guacamole last night (without the chips or salt)

While we are eating some protein we are sticking mostly to fruits and vegetables...and a lot of water.

It was a busy day at grandma's house. Everyone was in town celebrating and the house was full! Hugs, stories, and lots of love surrounded me as I photographed the grandchildren. From one week old all the way up to 3.

Let's start first with this brother and sister.

We played and jumped in the backyard beneath the trees. Take a look at those lashes and cheeks...so cute!

Being photographed is hard work, and she just needed a moment in her Daddy's arms. Happy Father's Day to all of the Dad's in the family.

And last but not least is the newest addition to the family! One week old with his big brother and sister. The love they have for their little brother makes me smile.

And I have to thank this little girl for being such a big help! She was my assistant for the day and did a great job! She is so very good at cheering babies up.

Elephant Ears

I was on a walk the other day when I noticed the leaves on this tree. Don't they look like elephant ears?

Fun Fact: There are two types of elephants: African and Asian (aka Indian elephant). One way you can tell them apart is by their ears. The African elephant is super easy; it has large ears shaped like the continent of Africa. The Asian Elephant has tiny ears.

I had such a fantastic time working with Janice. She was such a natural in front of the camera. Girl you rocked it! Montana (her horse) looked pretty handsome himself.

Cutback Challenge

Matt and I challenged ourselves to cut our food budget back by $100 this past month. Don't worry mom we still ate all of our whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. It is easy to simply resort to canned products in the food store when you want to cut back, but we were challenging ourselves to still eat healthy. We even continued to buy organic dairy which is 2 sometimes 3x more than regular! I have discovered that if we had a cow, chickens and a garden full of cilantro, tomatoes, red onions, and lettuce oh and avocados we would hardly ever have to go to the food store, but that is a little off topic.

Here is one of the ways we cut back. Instead of buying tortillas, pre-cooked bean, bread... I decided to make them from scratch.

I found this really simple cheap recipe for whole wheat pitas. See mom?? more grains. Now I have no idea how much pitas cost (ha maybe I should check to see if I am actually saving)!

Ingredients:
2¼ tsp. instant yeast
1 tbsp. honey
1¼ cups warm water (105˚-115˚ F), divided
1½ cups bread flour, divided
1½ cups whole wheat flour, divided
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 tsp. salt
Cornmeal, for sprinkling

They were super easy, fun, and quick! Kids can easily have fun helping with this recipe for all of you mom readers.

Strawberry Pie

Strawberries...mmmm...doesn't that just say SUMMER SUMMER SUMMER.

I have been craving strawberry pie for days...funny thing is I don't know if I have ever had strawberry pie! But how can you go wrong with strawberries, a little sugar, and my mom's famous pie crust. I had two problems though... only 1 cup flour, no strawberries, no car, a really big bridge, and a bike that only functions on gear 7!! But I really wanted strawberry pie.

Obviously, I made it to the store and back. I don't know if it was the sack of flour, the messed up bike, or just the shear incline of the bridge, but I returned home soaked with an occasional wobble of the legs. Good news is the ice cream I had to have on top of the pie didn't melt in my back pack!

Funny note: A man in the elevator asked if I was the one who smelled so good. I assured him it was not me as I wiped the sweat out of my eyes. He asked again as we both sniffed in that delicious vanilla scent- you know the one I am talking about. Once again I told him, " It is definitely not me."

Well, here it is ready for the oven!

Mmm! I can smell it baking!

I will let you know if it tops the workout to get the ingredients and the mess it left behind.

Two Boys Lives Forever Changed (Holland, MI Children's Photographer)

I was so blessed to photograph this family on Mother's Day. It was Anna's first mother's day as the mom of these two little boys!

I can not do the story of how this family came to be justice....so here it is from the words of Anna. May you be blessed, encouraged, and moved by their hearts...

On October 13, 2008, we became unsuspecting parents in Africa. We call it our "surprise" adoption - In many ways it was like a surprise pregnancy. While we were living as missionaries in Uganda, Micah landed in our arms after being abandoned on a bus. At the time he was malnourished and very near death. We had only been married 8 months and children were not yet on our horizon (or so we thought!) but it was clear that God was giving us an obvious and perfect opportunity to demonstrate His love to a vulnerable and sick little boy who needed it badly. More than just caring for him, we knew we were to give of ourselves, not just our time or money.

James 1:27 says, "Pure and undefiled religion is this: To look after widows & orphans in their distress and to keep oneself undefiled by the world." On the day Micah entered our world, we were confronted with the clear and direct call of God on our lives to care for an orphan. The choice before us was one of obedience and surrender to God's plan for our lives, or rejection of His call.

By saying "Yes," from that moment onward we were forever changed.

Shortly after we began our adoption journey to Micah, little Judah entered our world as well. We thought, "Why show Jesus to just one child and not two?" To us, bringing Judah into our family meant another little guy to love and to share life with. Another son! To Judah, it meant being rescued from an indefinite period of life in an institution. How could we dare say "no" to a family for him and by default say "yes" to him living life in an institution?

After much paperwork, time, energy & investment, both boys arrived in Michigan to their forever home with us in November 2009. People regularly come up to us and say, "Those little guys sure are lucky!" But in all truthfulness, we are the "lucky" ones. We are blessed beyond imagination to be Micah & Judah's parents. We've been given a role to play in their story of redemption from illness, loss of parents, vulnerability, and abandonment...To a place of health, belonging, family, and love. We realize that tremendous mercy has been extended to us through Jesus, which causes us to worship Him by extending mercy to the little ones He has told His people to care for.

There are approximately 143 million orphans in this world, just like Micah & Judah once were. Statistically speaking, with 2 billion professing Christians in this world...If only 7% of Christians adopted, there would be no more orphans. The reality is, there are far more families able to adopt than those that actually do it. For those who cannot adopt, there are so many ways to support the adoption of children into loving families.

Our lives are forever changed through the beauty of adoption. Yours could be, too!

Ice cream sounds good today, but on that day it was in the low 50's. They were still all for ice cream...I passed as my hands were already freezing to my camera body

and again!! America's next top model anybody. I was switching some stuff up on my camera looked up and saw these girls giving some attitude and honestly I just snapped the picture!

He likes his Cheeseburger

Matt and I went through college dating 844 miles apart! That is a 14 hour drive! I hated and loved the airport. The airport was where I would run to him two times a year at Thanksgiving and Christmas dropping my bags and throwing myself into his arms. And the airport is where I left him blurry eyed and drenched in tears.

It was the first time that I didn't have to mail him a package on his birthday in four years and I wanted to make it special. He ordered mini hamburgers with an assortment of toppings and a carmel cake that his mom made him growing up.

Okay...burgers...I can definitely do that. I found some mini rolls at Sam's club which I thought was such a steal- but we will be eating them for the next few months. I made guacamole, fried the bacon, cut the classic tomato, onion, lettuce, made horseradish sauce, bought the bbq, pepper jack cheese, cheddar cheese, american cheese, salsa, no mayo-doesn't like mayo.......

and we made these!!

Mine....pepper jack, mixture of bbq and horseradish, tomato lettuce and onion of course, and some bacon...Delicious

Now you are probably expecting to see a picture of the cake. Honestly, I was so embarrassed I chose not to take one...but now am wishing I had for future laughs. Matt's mom is amazing at making beautiful mouth watering cakes. I mean I did not like cake before I tasted her chocolate ganache cake...and that cake is indescribably...looking for the word...just plain WOW!

I learned some lessons with cake last time...so I made sure I carved off the hump on the top of the cake so I didn't have a cake slide ( last time it resulted in me hugging the cake trying to keep it together).

So I carved the cakes flat and poured the carmel filling on layer one. Note to self for next time...just because it makes 2 cups of filling doesn't mean you need it all- extra carmel can be a disaster. I placed the second layer of cake on top of the filling and quickly noticed a disaster in the making. What did I do? Stuck it in the fridge..carmel cools hard right? and I barricaded the cake with the milk, the oj, and the previous nights dinner. This just made everything sticky. My carmel oozed everywhere and hardened. So I iced the caked. It tasted soooo gooood, but looked like a third grade volcano project. However, my cake did not slide!!!!...it just oozed.

Matt came home. The kitchen was a disaster, the cake was a disaster, and I was pretending to not be a disaster. Taste is all that matters though...right?

The flowers bloomed in excitement as they awaited the beautiful little girl. The wind danced in a warm breeze, all was prepared. Heart shaped cookies glazed with rose colored icing, strawberry gummies for tasting, jelly bellies wrapped in paper cups, and Endless Flavor Tea was brewed.

Accompanied by Nona, little Sofie approached in a finely stitched lavender dress. Her golden hair was braided and her toes were dressed in pinks.

Such a little lady.

After tea Sofie read to Nona, Evander, Mommy, and me. I have never heard such funny tales.

Remember this little guy? We had so much fun running around the playground! He explored it from top to bottom. Climbing in every hole and slipping down every slide.

This picture just makes me smile. Seth loved the swing...we just had a hard time getting him out of it! He is definitely ready for the big boy swing.

The ladder went pretty high, but he conquered it by the end of the day!

Exploring again. Seth is very observant.
Anytime he heard a train or a truck pass by he shot up with excitement and began looking for it.

When Seth isn't running around outside...this is what you will find him doing.

As you can tell he loves to play his drum. Ladies and Gentlemen this little guy can keep a better beat than I can! At the rate he is going he is going to need some new drum sticks soon!

Take Me Out to the Ball Game...

...Matt came home the other night from work with free tickets to the Cleveland Indians game! Neither of us are Indians fans, in fact I know so little about baseball that I had to ask him where the scoreboard was located! I know embarrassing... but there were so many numbers every where.

Minutes into the game, Matt asked me if I was okay and I said, " Yeah sure...why?" He said, " You don't look so good, you look like you are in pain." I looked at him and said, " Just trying to focus."

After my few moments of what looked like painful watching of the game, I quickly found these subjects which brought a huge smile to my face!

Their outfits are so cute!!!

Matt just laughed as I waited and waited for these candy cane pin-striped men to come up and down our row. He also laughed when I told him that I wanted to see a bat crack! He told me that he didn't think it would happen, but sure enough CRACK!!!! They cracked a bat for me, at least that is how I would like to look at it.

I also liked this fuzzy purple version of Barney with a mustard mustache and tail.

The game was so exciting! It was my first pro game. Purple dancing mascots, pin striped hotdog sellers, bats cracking, the smell of roasted peanuts. It was great! I mean I missed 3/4 of the game, but that is okay I was entertained and before I knew it the game was over. There is so much that they don't show you on tv.

An Unexpected Gift

Church had just ended when I spotted a very beautiful little girl across the room pointing at me. She wore a lovely dress and had big blue eyes and blond hair. She came running to me and handed me a cluster of pink flowers. She said, " Hi Miss Cassie! I picked these from our garden for you." Her thoughtfulness filled me with so much joy. Her love reminded me of Jesus.

I had the best Elementary Mentor Teacher during my student teaching experience! Claudia absolutely loves children and they love her in return. She is one of those teachers that you go back and visit when you are teenager; her students think she is that cool! Side note: for those that may not know me, I still have a passion to become a teacher, but I also have one to be a children's photographer. The best part is that in both fields I get to be creative and work with children. And I know that God has all of my dreams and His all worked out in his timing!
Back to Claudia....Her passion for learning and excitement is so contagious. So, when she told me that I had to see Planet Earth...I knew it must be good.

A little overdue, but my husband and I just watched the first disc of Planet Earth and it is AMAZING! Amazing as in you have to see it! It doesn't matter what age you are. This movie is so cool.

I won't give too much away, but here were some moments that made me laugh so hard:

Baby Elephants, blinded by sandstorm, were walking head first into trees repeatedly
Birds whip lashing their heads back and forth and dancing jigs to attract a mate- you really won't believe this till you see it!
Surfing Seals
and my favorite: monkeys wading through water with such soar faces on because they were getting wet. Holding their hands up in the air as if they just had their nails painted!

It is really very good and I am going to stop here before I say to much. Definitely a must see!

Through everyday encounters with domestic poverty, we are reminded to appreciate having food and shelter, but most of us all but forget about our feet. Food, shelter, AND shoes facilitate life’s fundamentals. Imagine a life without shoes; constantly aware of the ground in front of you, suffering regular cuts and scrapes, tending to infection after each walk, and enduring not only terrain, but heat and cold.

The problem is large, but the solution is simple. Wearing shoes and practicing basic hygiene can prevent both infection and disease due to unsafe roads and contaminated soil.

The Founding of Toms Shoes

In 2006 an American traveler, Blake Mycoskie, befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Spring Time

Spring is here!!! I really am a girl that loves the snow, but I am also a girl that loves flip flops, loose clothing, running barefoot and I am not missing bulky sweaters, hats, mittens, puffy winter jackets that make me feel like I am being swallowed whole. In fact, they are tucked away deep into the bottom of my closet, not to be seen even if it decides to snow again.

Welcome to our Jeep.

It is ruggedly beautiful! Sometimes having one car complicates things, but sometimes I secretly love it because that means more time spent driving with my husband or getting some time to simply walk.

So we started our day early...him needing to get to work...and me needing to tag along for an after work picnic. Problem one- our refrigerator was empty the night before and I need to bring a side dish. Problem two-I will be in the car all day.

Problem solved!

Recipe: Tess's Corn and Bean Salsa Trunk Style

1 cutting board
1 knife
1 bowl with lid
1 can opener- I forgot this one
cooler of water to rinse hands and cans

2 cans petite diced tomatoes (drain)
1 can white corn (drain and rinse)
2 cans black beans (drain and rinse)
1/2 red onion
1/2 bunch cilantro
2T red wine vinegar
1 T olive oil
2 limes

I prepared the red wine vinegar and oil in advance.

So Good and so Healthy!

Normally squeezing these is Mat's job because I honestly can't- that weak I know. That is the problem when you grow up playing no hand eye coordination sports. Yes I throw like a girl, I can't do a pull up without a chair, and I can hardly squeeze a lime, but God gave me some favor on this special day. Look I destroyed it!

...and the FINALE! Eat by spoonfuls or with tortilla chips.

Don't worry this isn't turning into a cooking blog, but I do love to cook. Now that it is warmer more photo shoots to come.

...weddings!

This past weekend, we made a long, fast trip back to New Jersey to see family and Matt's cousin's wedding!

I absolutely love weddings!! If Matt and I are ever out driving and we pass a bride and groom getting their pictures taken....I yell, "Look, a wedding!" Matt knows right away to turn the car around so I can get a better look at the bride in her dress. Before I even open my mouth, Matt says, " I know you think she is so pretty."

I love the details about weddings and the way each bride, and possibly the groom too, design their wedding to reflect their personality. Most of all I love the hugs, kisses, and the celebration amongst family and friends.

Here are a few of my favorite shots. I had to be careful not to jump in front of the videographer and photographer at the wedding. It's a bummer, but I didn't come back with the best shots of the bride and groom. My clicking and the photographer clicking during the ceremony turned into the sound of paparazi... so I, with a sad face, put down my camera.

This is one of my favorites of the day, Matt's grandmother. It was such a blessing to see almost all of our grandparents during the trip.

We are a little bit tired, but we are back and feeling very blessed by the loved ones we are surrounded by.

Crayola Doesn't Make the Color of Your Eyes

I found today drawings from two very special little ones named Zachary and Sam. They made pictures for me a few days before we left New Jersey for Ohio. I miss pancake breakfasts with them on Saturday mornings and playing with them at the park. I have so many good and funny memories with these two little ones and can't wait to see them again!

This is my jeep. They loved the jeep. One time Sam sat in it for an hour pretending to drive and making spitting BRRMMMM BRMMM sounds. Safety Tips: put the parking break on...no keys...and I even put rocks behind the wheels. Never underestimate a 3 year old!

Red Velvet Craving

I have never had red velvet cake before! When I heard that one of my friends, who is pregnant, was craving red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting I decided to bake some for her. Which means I get to try my first ever red velvet cupcake!!

As I write this I am eating guacamole...to try to keep myself from taking another bite out of this delicious cupcake and licking the cream cheese frosting bowl clean. It's working but I am running out of guac!

Why is it that whenever I try to cut a recipe in half- it never works...without fail I will not halve one ingredient and of course it was the milk this time! So I now have 24 cupcakes!! Anyone want some cupcakes??

Breakfast at Tiffany's in Boston

Don't these storefront windows remind you of the wonderful classic Breakfast at Tiffany's?

Audrey Hepburn wore a little black dress. I would wear the Tiffany's mint green on the left. Aren't they adorable! How about that white one in the middle?! The white one is actually my favorite, anything white and flowing is my favorite. I told Jenna I liked the one in the middle and she said to me, "So predictable." She knows me too well.

Doesn't this remind you of the little toy store in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Remember? The one...shhhh... they stole masks from because it was a day of doing things that Holly and Paul, or Fred, had never done before.

Speaking of things I have never done before...this Friday Matt and I are going to a Fish Fry with some friends. Do not really ask me what that is...all I know is that there is Fish involved and churches hold Fish Fry Friday each week during Lent? I had never heard of a Fish Fry until we moved to Ohio.

When asked how I love, serve, and inspire others, I guess the reality is: I don't. You see, I'm not really all that loving, inspiring, or servant-hearted. But Jesus is and he lives his life through me. Let me show you what I mean.

When I asked God if he loved me, this is what I heard...

When I formed you, I took your eye and poured into it the purity and peace of a dove. I gathered together the sparkling topaz and the blue of the sea; I took a flex of fir mica, a rock that captures color. I took the black of the raven, a bird that watches and waits. I took these and held them in my hand and created your eye. Your eyelashes were made long and soft like the tail of a colt anew and fresh to the world. And to your eye I gave compassion and tears of love. Your eyes will see my people and ache for those who are broken and lost.

God is the one who loves, serves, and inspires; when I get out the way, he does it through me. That is my goal in life and as a photographer: “God, give me your eyes to see beauty, your heart to bring joy, your life to bring everywhere I go.”

Rather than try and tell you myself, I asked my friends and family , “How do I love, serve, and inspire others?”

I believe that God is taking what little I have and giving me the ability to become a role model, a photographer that loves serves and inspires others. When I look at Amy Wenzel's blog I see children's faces that have been loved and I see a women that is a role model for me. This is why I want to walk by her side for a day or two.

Lobster Tail!!!

I used to have thoughts of becoming a cake decorator like the ones on the show Cake Boss...until I attempted my first cake. Let's just say it was a complete disaster!! I think their was more icing than cake in the end and my gingerbread cake house leaned like the Tower of Pisa. Only moments into the cake building process was I yelling, "Matt...hurry!!!!!Come Here HURRY!!!" He found me basically hugging the cake trying to keep everything together! Parts crumbled to the floor. My art studio sculpting skills from college were not helping.

I have not completely given up on cakes, but my dreams have dwindled and at the moment I am dreading making a cake for Matt's birthday.

...but this post is about lobster tails a pastry I first caught a glimpse of on a Cake Boss episode. And I have wanted one ever since!!!

Jenna and I split one in Boston and we were both heavenly stuffed ... moments later feeling a little sick from so much delicious cream.

My attempted shots of other goodies within the bakery, which was so full that the end of the line went well onto the street. All crammed together, many were trying to decide which pastry to get, but I knew exactly what I wanted.

I had a great time visiting my best friend, Jenna, in Boston this past week!! There is so much to talk about and the Pizza, oh the delicious Pizza, is making the first post.

I'm Back!!!

Back from Boston!!! I took a trip to visit my best friend in Boston these past 5 days. So no... I did not fall of the face of the earth; however, I went 5 days without my own computer! I felt like I was missing an apendage.

I had a wonderful time with Jenna exploring Boston, but I am glad to be home. I have much to recap in the coming days. I came back to Cleveland transformed....

I was wearing short sleeves!!!!! Thank you God for some sunshine on my ghostly skin!

3 inches less of hair!!!!! AAHHH! I guess that is what happens when you go to a salon that chargers $14 for your haircut

and a very sore body...thanks to Jenna (she is a personal trainer) who tested out some new techniques on me

but Spring is coming everyone!!! The snow will probably come again, but more sunshine, longer days, warmer weather is on it's way!!!

Never Never Let It Cool

It's snowing!! Actually, this isn't unusual for Cleveland and I probably say this every morning. But did I ever tell you how much I LOVE the snow? I think it is beautiful and I like walking around or playing in it too, but today was not one of those days. Soft big flakes falling down turned into small pellets flying parallel to the pavement...it's a blizzard. I took ten steps out the door...

turned around and ran back inside.

Sorry scarf and mittens but today is just too windy

If you are having a day like this...here is something tasty to warm you right up.

I am going to unpack my oh so complicated wonderful HOT CHOCOLATE...very very kid friendly with vitamins too. Could hot chocolate really get that good?

Here is what you will need...

Milk and Ovaltine are the staples. I don't use the packaged hot chocolate...yuk. Ovaltine give a rich and creamy taste and it has vitamins moms!! Oh, and please don't use water..yuk...choose to strengthen your bones.

The Hershey kisses and whip cream are extras just for today, well actually the dark Hershey kisses are for everyday, but dark chocolate has antioxidants!!

Warm the milk and add at least 4 spoonfuls of Ovaltine. I added I think 5 or 6. Stir. Add your dollop of whip cream and enjoy!!

I like it really chocolaty, so I plopped a kiss on top!

Not only did I get to hold this beautful little one the other day, but was able to play with and read to her big brother!! I love to read stories to children and this little guy kept bringing me book after book which I just could not turn down. Pictures of him to come , but back for now to his little newborn sister!

Normally this little girl sleeps and sleeps, but lucky for me I was able to catch a glimpse of these stunning blue eyes!

I can't wait to share more with you! I had a blast playing with train sets, reading books, and this family has a mini trampoline and tons of those plastic colorful balls, the kind that they have at McDonalds Playrooms! What are they called, the kind that you dive into and throw up into the air? Anyway, I was very jealous of their playrooms and was wishing I was two feet tall.

I draw what catches my eye...sometimes it is a moment full of joy other times they are serious, but I love to draw pictures that make me want to know more of a story...and cause me to look deeper.

This barn cat wanted her own photo shoot. She was so cute and friendly.

Brrr was it cold outside!!!!!

Katie has such a love for these animals and they love and kiss her right back.

But when it is time to ride...its time to ride. I love the seriousness in Katie's face.

It was so much fun to capture the horse and Katie in action. It was absolutely beautiful to watch the horse open up its stride and gallop. These were great shots to turn black and white.

I had to take a second look at this one. I feel like I am right back in the moment. Everything looks like it's spinning! I was sitting on my bum for this shot and as Katie came flying around me I spun panning my camera with her and the horse. I got it!!! but my bottom had skid marks...oh well. Whatever it takes to get the shot.

Splish Splash

Sometimes I wonder how I and the floor end up soaked whenever I am around a sink. I wash my face...puddle everywhere and I think more water runs up (or is that down?) my arms. I wash dishes at the sink and water floods the counter top soaking my shirt, dripping down the cabinets and onto my socks. Everything ends up soaked!

After talking to my mom yesterday, I think I understand why...

When I was little I was a little fish. I loved water!! If I could have been any animal; it would have been a dolphin! The only time I think I really purposefully disobeyed my parents was when I had to get out of the pool.

During the winter, when I couldn't play in the puddles, I would put on my raincoat and boots and ask mom if she could fill up the sink. Mom would pull out a stool to stand on, and cover the floor and counters in towels before she began filling the sink because everything was going to get wet.

Moms note: this is a great way to not only clean dishes, but to clean your child as well, oh and it's a lot of fun!

I would giggle with joy as mom plopped floating and sinking objects into the sink!!!

Thanks mom for being so creative, but now I need to put on my raincoat and boots before I wash the dishes!

I like to just take walks sometimes. I love to listen to the wind and breath it in as I slowly walk. I like to tune out the taxis and buses honking, the people on their cell phones, and tune into the loving voice of Jesus.

I was on one of those walks a few months ago, when the air was warm and the trees were alive. I was walking beside the underneath of a bridge trying to avoid the noise above when I saw this man... and my heart broke.

So many questions fill my head. Why is he here? What happened? What is his story?

There is another homeless man that sleeps on our street. He sleeps under a huge piece of plastic surrounded by his belongings and huddled up against a building trying to keep out of the wind. Many times Matt and I have tried to show kindness towards this man in particular, but he refuses conversation, food,clothing...

One day we both went to invite him over to help decorate our Christmas tree and eat cookies. It was such a cold day and he was sleeping in the snow. He shook his head no even when I pleaded with him in my pom pom hat. Questions began to fill my head as we walked away. Why? Who hurt him that he can't trust a girl wearing a pom pom hat? Isn't he cold and hungry? Can he talk, does he understand...Oh God why does he remain alone?

Everyday we drive or walk past him hidden beneath the plastic. Just wanting to tell him that someone loves him; he is beautiful.

READING READING READING

I think my husband almost fell over dead when I started to get into photography. I don't think he has ever seen me read so much! I go to the library at least twice a week.

When God first talked with me about picking up my camera and learning more, I completely dove into reading. I came home from the library that week with 9-10 books on exposure, lighting, the negative... I read at least a book a day (shh they have a lot of pictures)! I couldn't get enough and still can't.

This past week I think I put an order in at the Cleveland Library for every book on Lightroom ( it's editing software) that I possible could. If you wanted one I am truly sorry....you are just going to have to wait. Now if the Cleveland Library doesn't have it they will find it in another library, which is awesome for me, bad for you because I think I took out every book on Lightroom within at least a 50 mile radius of Cleveland!

In addition to books I also read photography blogs...a lot. My pastor talked about balance in church this past week....and God convicted me just a little. He didn't swing down a mallet he just gently reminded me of Him. So I am cutting back just a little.

Wow is it hard to find balloons in the dead of winter (so yes not the best shot).

You know when you let a balloon go and it takes off up into the sky? Many days I just want my dreams of my photography business to be reality...I want to take off...and fly. Waiting...waiting is very humbling and focuses me right back on God. Faith pulls me through each day. Because only He can do this not me.

Sometimes I get a little deflated in the waiting. I set my eyes too much on the end and don't realize what's happening right in front of me.

and sometimes like an overinflated balloon, I fill up with everything I have learned all day and explode as soon as Matt walks in the door. A big ball of stored up energy hits him with "Guess what I learned today?" There are some days when I try to tell him everything before he even gets his shoes off.

With my mind set on starting a business it's easy for me to only see myself.
This has been my prayer lately- that I will take my eyes off of myself and onto God and then onto others.

That is what this business is supposed to be about anyway: blessing others not me. To bring life....to show beauty...and to fill others with the joy that only comes from heaven.
